Research summary
Thymalin is a polypeptide complex extracted from the thymus of cattle, comprising a low-molecular-weight fraction of thymic peptides. Like Cortexin it is a standardised preparation defined by its source tissue and extraction process rather than by a single sequence, and it belongs to the tissue-specific peptide preparations from which the synthetic bioregulators were later derived. The thymus involutes progressively with age, and the resulting decline in thymic peptide output is the central premise of the research literature on this preparation. Published work, largely from Russian immunology and gerontology groups, examines effects on T-lymphocyte differentiation and maturation, on the balance of T cell subpopulations, and on cell-mediated immune parameters. Studies also report effects on markers of immune ageing, which is the basis for its appearance in the geroprotection literature alongside the synthetic bioregulator peptides. Each lot is characterised by RP-HPLC peptide profiling, with the compositional fingerprint published against the batch number rather than a single-peak purity figure.
Handling & reconstitution
Supplied lyophilised. Allow the vial to reach room temperature before opening. Reconstitute with sterile water or a compatible sterile diluent, added slowly against the inner wall. As a peptide complex rather than a pure compound, Thymalin dissolves less cleanly than a single synthetic peptide — allow two to three minutes with gentle swirling. A faint initial opalescence usually clears on standing. Persistent cloudiness or visible precipitate indicates the vial should not be used.
Storage
Lyophilised: 2–8 °C or -20 °C, sealed, dry and protected from light. Peptide-complex preparations tolerate temperature excursion less well than defined synthetic peptides, so minimise time at ambient temperature. Reconstituted: 2–8 °C and used promptly — within days rather than weeks. Do not freeze the reconstituted preparation: freezing causes selective precipitation of individual fractions and alters the composition profile the product is defined by.
