Research summary
GHRP-6 is a synthetic hexapeptide and the original growth hormone-releasing peptide — the compound whose activity, characterised before ghrelin itself was identified, implied the existence of an endogenous ligand and led directly to ghrelin's discovery. That history is why it remains a fixture in the literature despite newer and more selective alternatives. It is a full GHS-R1a agonist with a pronounced orexigenic effect: of the classical GHRPs, GHRP-6 produces by far the strongest appetite signalling, and it is routinely used as a positive control in feeding-behaviour and ghrelin-pathway research for exactly that reason. It also cross-activates ACTH, cortisol and prolactin release. Separate work examines its cytoprotective activity in tissue-injury models, an effect described as partly independent of growth hormone release. Purity by RP-HPLC and identity by LC-MS, with batch-specific analytical data published for every lot.
Handling & reconstitution
Supplied lyophilised. Equilibrate to room temperature before opening the vial. Add bacteriostatic water down the inner wall and swirl gently until dissolved — typically under a minute. GHRP-6 carries two tryptophan residues and is correspondingly light-sensitive, so keep it out of direct illumination while working. The solution should be clear.
Storage
Lyophilised: -20 °C, sealed, dry and dark. Reconstituted: 2–8 °C, used within approximately four weeks, protected from light throughout. Tryptophan photo-oxidation is the principal degradation pathway; store the reconstituted vial wrapped or in an amber container rather than clear glass on an open shelf.
