Product information

Research summary

Cortexin is a polypeptide complex extracted from the cerebral cortex of cattle and pigs, comprising a fraction of low-molecular-weight neuropeptides together with amino acids, vitamins and trace minerals. Like Cerebrolysin it is a standardised preparation rather than a defined single molecule, and its identity rests on the extraction process and the resulting composition profile. The research literature, predominantly Russian in origin, describes tissue-specific neurotrophic activity and examines the preparation in models of cerebral ischaemia, traumatic injury and cognitive impairment. Mechanistic work reports effects on the balance of excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters, antioxidant activity, and modulation of neurotrophic factor expression. The distinction usually drawn against Cerebrolysin in the literature is one of source tissue and molecular weight fraction rather than mechanism. Each lot is characterised by RP-HPLC peptide profiling, with the compositional fingerprint published against the batch number rather than a single-peak purity value.

Handling & reconstitution

Supplied lyophilised. Allow the vial to reach room temperature before opening. Reconstitute with sterile water or a compatible sterile diluent, added slowly down the inner wall. As a complex mixture rather than a single peptide, Cortexin dissolves somewhat less cleanly than a pure compound — allow two to three minutes and swirl gently. A very faint opalescence immediately after reconstitution is not unusual and generally clears as it stands. Persistent cloudiness or visible precipitate after standing means the vial should be discarded.

Storage

Lyophilised: 2–8 °C or -20 °C, sealed, dry and protected from light. Peptide-complex preparations are less tolerant of temperature excursion than single synthetic peptides, so avoid extended periods at ambient temperature. Reconstituted: use promptly — within days rather than weeks — and store at 2–8 °C in the interim. Do not freeze the reconstituted preparation: freezing causes selective precipitation of individual fractions and changes the composition that defines the product.
